I cannot give any specifics, but I may have a possible chance of getting something sort of related to this site. I can say no more. I just hope it comes with the hilarious sub-titles.

But now it seems the local alt-weekly has stopped updating the thing all together. The club listings have never been reliable, but neither have the Courier-Journal's. Those two combined and a few strategically placed phone calls were usually enough to find out what was really happening in town. Now it seems I'll be at the mercy of the CJ. Ugh.|W|P|88221357|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/29/2003 12:06:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|As I said a couple of posts ago, there are some exciting and very interesting things happening for me right now. I cannot speak of them yet, but if all goes according to plan I will be a very happy man. I spent the better part of my weekend hiding from the blistering cold. I watched the big game, ate a couple brats and drank a few beers. The outcome of the all-pirate themed SuperBowl was of little concern to me. Both teams were the kind of dirty-playing, hard-hitting bastards that I love to watch. My only wish was that it would have been closer.
There's not much music here in town for the next little while and maybe that's as it should be. With Hans Blix's report today and the State of the Union speech tomorrow the time is short. War is upon us. It's going to be a nasty business, as all war is bound to be. But it is necessary. And my thoughts these days are with the men and women charged with fighting on our behalf. Be strong, be safe and come home soon.|W|P|88135371|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/23/2003 09:28:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|This is very good news. I think maybe all the public disapproval did its job. This is an absolutely super-fantastic radio station! This is what good music sounds like. I remember walking around at the Southgate House during the Interpol show and seeing a bunch of people wearing radio station shirts and hats. "Dang, that's kind of square." I thought to myself. I didn't even consider that they might be advertising the best damn radio station I've ever heard.
I don't understand why, with soooo many bad radio stations in Louisville, we couldn't have even one which even approaches the level of coolness set by WOXY. Sure, WFPK (91.9) plays some decent stuff, but they're shooting more for the adult hipster market. With the recent census reports which state that more young people are coming to Louisville than are leaving, we should have a decent radio station. I mean, come on, look at this playlist! Amazing!|W|P|87916747|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/23/2003 03:04:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|I stumbled onto a mention of a band called The Black Keys while poking around on pitchforkmedia.com. I was first struck by the fact that they are a blues-rock duo, and with a name like that, the White Stripes comparisons are bound to come up. I downloaded a couple of their mp3's, and although there is room for comparison to the hip, red-and-white-clad ex-husband and wife, The Black Keys have a very appealing and different sound. To quote Ben, "god -- this is like Joe Cocker with like... Greg Allman thrown in."
So, being freshly turned-on to this new outfit, I was elated to see that they are scheduled to play this Saturday at The Rud. And they're playing with a band called Tomacco. You can't beat that. I'll be there for sure. You should be too.|W|P|87914955|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/22/2003 03:47:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|More Flaming Lips.
My favorite Flaming Lips album is The Soft Bulletin, by leaps and bounds. It's up there as one of my absolute favorite albums of all times. I could go into all the reasons for its greatness (um, like the pulsing, sweeping, beautiful sound that permeates the entire album) but I don't pretend to be articulate when it comes to describing what moves me about music. For god's sake just listen to it.
Anyhow, I was reading some stuff on the band's site when I came across Wayne Coyne's notes on The Soft Bulletin. Read them all, but I point to this quote as an explanation of why I like this band more and more every day. After starting the notes by stating "I Am Not On Drugs...yet" he goes on to speak about his experience with sound and silence in a very artistic but ultimately down-to-earth manner. Then, in an effort to dispel any potential rumors about his mental state upon creating the album, he says:
It may sound like I am a trembling, drooling, freak who has gone mad.... This is not madness; it is, I believe, the very opposite....
I say this only to make the point that I do not wish to be perceived as nuts, mad, drug-damaged or even eccentric.... All of these cliches, if they were true, I would openly accept. But since they are wrong I feel the need to proclaim, with some authority, that this image be rejected. Knowing full well that there is a certain amount of insulation and sympathy that accompanies this persona. What I mean is that, when a person is considered "unstable," he or she is able to do things that would otherwise be deemed "stupid" and get away with it.... I have pursued questionable goals, I admit... but I have pursued them with sober determination towards, I feel, an appreciation of new possibilities....
Hearing Coyne talk in such pragmatic terms about his own creativity is refreshing to say the least.|W|P|87858865|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/22/2003 11:16:00 AM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|Go read what Ben has to say about WOXY 97X FM in Cincinnati. He ain't lyin'! This station has almost made me think differently about Cincinnati as a whole. I am sooo going to have a FlamingLips:Zaireeka listening party. I just ordered the four disc album from Amazon, along with the Bob Dylan's "Bob Dylan Live 1975 (The Bootleg Series Volume 5)" which comes highly recommended by Mr. Ken Layne. For those of you who don't know, Zaireeka is an album on four discs, intended to played simultaneously. Thus the idea of a listening party. I figure I'll have some folks over, assemble four CD players, and attempt to play conductor. I'm sure lots of people have done this already, but as I am a late-comer to the Flaming Lips Appreciation society, the time for this party is now.
If anyone is interested in participating in this venture, and in contributing a CD player to the cause, let me know via e-mail or comments.|W|P|87844940|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/19/2003 11:16:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|
What a weekend! Friday I made the short but scenic trip up to Newport, Ky to hobnob with the hipsters at the Southgate House. The cause for this trip was the uberhip Interpol, the "Next Big Thing" if you ask anyone who matters. I made the trip with Ben and his friend Jason and had an excellent time. The opening acts were Mallory (whose name I managed to remember by thinking to myself "family ties, family ties, family ties") and Calla.
I was reminded just how much I like pretentious art/indie-rock. There's nothing at all wrong with being artistic or independent, but music of that ilk often rubs people the wrong way. That is ultimately understandable. But I enjoy experimental, cerebral and dense music very much. I also enjoy simple, catchy and fun music, which as I see it sets me apart from a lot of the indie-rock crowd. I may be applying an unnecessarily broad brush to that group, but so be it.
The outcome of my recently re-sparked interest in this type of music may very well be my attempt to start playing it. Once I get my hands on the electric bass I ordered I hope to get right back down to playing regularly. I've been playing nothing but Bluegrass lately, and as much as I enjoy that style of music it allows little creative outlet for bass players. So when the bass is in hand, I will begin the process of seeking-out persons of like mind. If you know anyone, let me know. Thanks.
Saturday I was a bum. I slept a lot, went to the grocery, and slept some more. Sunday I slept some more, then watched the football conference championships and went up to the BBC for the last Sunday of Blue Hollow. It was a big crowd with an unbelievable number of absolutely stunningly gorgeous women. I don't know who told them I was coming, but I appreciate whoever it was putting the word out. Thanks again.
Oh, and I should mention that I recently found out that my mom and sister have been reading my site. Taking a cue from this Achewood strip, I will be limiting my future posts to topics including my love for my family, church, and taking children to breakfast. That is all.|W|P|87710040|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/17/2003 03:39:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|Mike B. just sent over a link to his brother Pat's new band, Mr. Panic Button. I remember him playing some demos for me what must have been at least a year ago, and they were pretty good. They've obviously been practicing, because the MP3's on the site sound great. They're supposed to be playing some art gallery Saturday, and I don't know if I'd want to deal with that kind of a scene, but I'm definitely going to check them out live one of these days.|W|P|87606710|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/16/2003 11:14:00 AM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|The mother-grabbin god-forsaken Check Engine light come on today on the way to work. It was a very nice trip, and I had a good time visiting with all my friends up there. Special thanks to mister Mike Medina for taking me in and giving me a place to stay for free. As usual, we did a lot of running around and ate lots of great food. I also went to see Mike's most recent band, The Gin Palace Jesters, which also features two of my other friends, Dave Sisson and Rod Glaze. I have pictures, and if they're any good, I'll have them up shortly.
Chicago is a great town, and I could definitely see myself living there one day. But for now, it's back to work.
Update: Here are the pictures!|W|P|87363967|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/13/2003 01:22:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|There appears to be an influx of visitors from Brazilian and/or South and Central American domains. This comes as a surprise to me, as I don't know many folks from that area of the world. And what's more, they're all going directly to the Knob Creek computer-shooting pictures page. So I guess somebody somehow got this link and is passing it around.
So, to all my new visitors: welcome. And if any of you are so inclined, shoot me an e-mail and tell me how you found my site. My address is jackson@losinlouisville.com. I'm not letting the bastards keep me down. What will come of this car trouble? Who knows? I may stick with the Focus. I may ditch it and get something more reliable. I may ditch it and get something less reliable, but that I can work on myself. Whatever the long-term outcome, the short-term outcome is going to be my ass it Chicago this weekend.|W|P|87163546|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/08/2003 04:47:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|
If I didn't hate that kind of crap on web pages, I would be typing in big pulsing blood-red letters with a black background right now. I took my car in to be checked and tuned-up for my impending trip to Chicago this morning. I knew the brakes were bad. And I knew the engine was doing something funny. But now I'm faced with a 2001 Ford Focus with a bad fuel pump. And over $1000 in parts, labor and taxes to take care of everything.
So that means no trip to Chicago, because now I cannot afford to spend the necessary money to get up there and back. Because my practically new, but remarkably out-of-warranty car is broken. DAMNIT! And that also means no trip up to Newport, Ky to see Interpol with Ben.
What's the answer here? Should I have not bought this particular car? Is it no good? This was supposed to be the new, reliable efficient, European-designed Ford! But it's just a heap of crap like every other heap of crap out there. If I'm going to be driving a heap of crap, I want my damn 1979 Ford F100 back. I want to be able to fix it myself. And I don't want expensive things breaking after a mere 45,000 miles. Sure, that's a bunch of miles for a 2001 to have. But it's nowhere near enough to justify this outlay of cash.
Like I said, BIG blood-red pulsing letters here. I know I'm not going to be able to get anything else done at work here today, but of course I have to wait to get a ride home. Because my god-forsaken piece of trash car is in the shop! I'm starting to get little muscle twitches in my face I'm so mad. There must be waves of heat and anger radiating from my head right now.|W|P|87131189|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/06/2003 10:29:00 PM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|Here are the pictures:
Hiking and Rocking|W|P|87040248|W|P||W|P|jacksoncooper@gmail.com1/05/2003 03:34:00 AM|W|P|Jackson|W|P|I don't know what to say, except WOW! It was a marathon concert tonight at Headliners with the fantastic Bobby Bare Jr. and the super-fantastic My Morning Jacket. I know I probably sound like their promoter at this point, but I care not. The boys hit a new peak tonight in front of their hometown crowd. And they let loose even more new material, hinting at the impending greatness of the album they are about to record.
Keyboardist Danny Cash warned me before the show that it was going to be a long one. "I hope you brought some no-doze" he said. But the no-doze wasn't necessary. The time flew by. The only discomfort was the unbelievable heat. But I wasn't about to let that get in the way of a great show. And neither were the other 800 people packed into the hall.
One of these days I'll catch up on my pictures. I've got some good ones from tonight that I'll get up soon, as well as those Hiking pics I talked about. For now, here's another thumbnail for ya.
